S u s a n Eloise Hinton was born in 1950, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While still in high school Hinton began work on The Outsiders, one of the first in the popular genre of "problem novels." Published when Hinton was still in high school, The Outsiders met with great critical acclaim. Profits from the novel enabled her to attend the University of Tulsa, where she graduated in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in education.
