Evolution says that due to genetic variation, some organisms are better suited to their environment than others and survive to reproduce. In War of the Worlds, the Martians seem to be about to take over Earth, as their machines are more powerful than those of the humans. By implication, they are also more intelligent than humans, and better able to compete for the Earth's resources. But in the end, the Martians turn out not to be adapted to Earth's environment, as some microorganism kills them.
