    In 1853, at the age of 35, Tolstoy began writing War and Peace. The first installments were published in 1865.

    The novel was published between 1865 and 1869, so it's believed he started writing it about 1862, although accounts differ on the year he started it. The last installment was published in 1869, so he probably finished it in 1869. He would have published the last volume right away since the publisher was waiting for it.
