Bryson writes this novel in 1st person point of view using a casual and enthusiastic tone. This tone fits the audience - Bryson is not writing for the expert hiker, he is writing for the general public. In order to help his audience experience his trip, Bryson uses sensory language. The example below uses words like "click" and "snuffling" to call upon the sense of hearing: There was a sound of undergrowth being...

I would love to explore some of the rainforests or to do an African safari. I've never been overseas and would love to do so once my two boys are a little older. The pull of a safari is irresistable for me. That would be the ultimate adventure for me. I've already had a really strenuous adventure in the Southwest, 2 years ago, when I hiked Canyon de Chelle, which is an entire day's hike and a difficult hike, as well. That is my...

Do I really have to be limited? I would love to walk the Trail myself - living in CT, I have done some of it already, but I'd like the pride of being a thru-hiker. I also want to explore the rain forests, bike ride across the United States, and go on safari... to name a few things!!

Bill Bryson, author of "A Walk in the Woods", spent a good part of his adult life (something like 20 years) in England. He wrote a book called "Notes from a Small Island" about his experiences there. In 1995, he returned to the United States with his family, and they settled in New Hampshire. Living in this spot in New England, Bryson was not far away from the trail. In an attempt to get reacquainted with his...

It took a lot of courage for Bill Bryson to stop everything he was doing, drop his cares/responsibilities, and take a walk in the woods. It's right up there with backpacking across Europe... but at middle age!

If you had the opportunity to do something as arduous as walking the Appalachian Trail, what would you do? Me, I'd like to go to the Peruvian jungle and learn more about the native culture.
