Waiting to Exhale has four main characters: Savannah Jackson, Bernadine Harris, Robin Stokes, and Gloria Matthews. Savannah and Robin are narrators, each of her own story. The stories of Bernadine and Gloria are related in the third person. The novel is filled largely with the women's comments about their lives, their relationships with each other, with men, careers, families, problems.
