Although well regarded as a playwright and librettist, W. H. Auden is known chiefly as a poet. During his lifetime, he published more than twenty collections of poetry, establishing himself as a major voice in twentieth century literature. His work includes a remarkable variety of lyric poems, notable for their range of thought and technique.
