The Yearling (1994) The Yearling

The Yearling ★★½ 1994 TV remake of the classic Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings novel about a boy and his orphaned fawn. The Baxters are struggling in '30s Florida: Pa Penny (Strauss) is a hardscrabble farmer and severe Ma Ora (Smart) has lost three of her four children. Surviving son, 12-year-old Jody (Horneff), gets more than his share of life's hard lessons—with even his adored pet causing problems. On the cloying side, the 1946 big-screen version is still the one to watch. Filmed in South Carolina. 98m/C VHS. Peter Strauss, Jean Smart, Wil Horneff, Brad Greenquist, Jarred Blanchard, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Nancy Moore Atchison; Director: Rod Hardy; Writer: Joe Wiesenfeld; Cameo: Lee Holdridge.
