For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) For Whom the Bell Tolls

For Whom the Bell Tolls ★★★½ 1943 Hemingway novel, gorgeously translated to the big screen, features a star-crossed romantic tale of derring-do. American schoolteacher Robert Jordan (Cooper) decides to join the Spanish Civil War and fight the fascists. He's ordered to rendezvous with peasant guerillas, to aid in blowing up a bridge, and in the rebel camp Jordan meets the beautiful Maria (Bergman). Lots of heroics (and some romance under the stars). Both leads were personally selected by the author. Originally released at 170 minutes. 130m/C VHS, DVD. Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman, Akim Tamiroff, Katina Paxinou, Arturo de Cordova, Vladimir Sokoloff, Mikhail Rasumny, Fortunio Bonanova, Victor Varconi, Joseph Calleia, Alexander Granach, Yakima Canutt, George Coulouris, Yvonne De Carlo, Martin Garralaga, Soledad Jiminez, Duncan Renaldo, Tito Renaldo, Pedro de Cordoba, Frank Puglia, John (Jack) Mylong, Eric Feldary, Lilo Yarson, Leo Bugakov, Antonio Molina; Director: Sam Wood; Writer: Dudley Nichols; Writer: Ray Rennahan; Cameo: Victor Young.
