Waking Life (2001) Waking Life

Waking Life ★★½ 2001 (R) Linklater's innovative and visually ground-breaking look at dreams, life, and philosophy doesn't really seem to have a plot. What it does have is several vignettes of people mostly just talking about the above subjects. What makes it stunning is the look of the project. Linklater "filmed" the scenes on digital video, then had a group of artists digitally "paint" over the footage, assigning different artists different scenes or actors so as to have a variety of styles. The result is a trippy experiment that might not appeal to many people except philosophy majors, computer geeks, or chemically altered college students. Film buffs looking for something new would do well to check it out. 99m/C VHS, DVD, Wide.
