Victory ★★½ 1995 (R) In 1913, Axel Heyst (Dafoe) is living on a remote island in the Dutch East Indies. He makes a trip to the port town of Surabaya and becomes enamored of Alma (Jacob), a violinist who plays in the hotel's orchestra. Alma is being coerced by hotel owner Schomberg (Yanne) into becoming his mistress and Axel decides to take her with him back to his island. Schomberg then sends a couple of thieves (Neill, Sewell) after them by falsely saying that Axel has amassed a fortune. No happy endings; based on the novel by Joseph Conrad. 99m/C VHS, DVD.
