Up Close and Personal (1996) Up Close and Personal

Up Close and Personal ★★★ 1996 (PG-13) Ambitious Reno card dealer Tally Atwater (Pfeiffer) wants to get into broadcasting and finds her chance at a Miami TV station where she's mentored by successful veteran-reporter-turned-producer Warren Justice (Redford). They fall in love but find their careers clashing as Tally climbs the media success ladder. Originally inspired by the tragic life of NBC reporter Jessica Savitch, whose problems with drugs and abusive relationships led to a sad ending, film turned into a star-powered romance with media trappings and another variation of "A Star is Born." It's now "suggested" by Alanna Nash's book "Golden Girl." 124m/C VHS, DVD, Wide. Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert Redford, Kate Nelligan, Stockard Channing, Joe Mantegna, Glenn Plummer, James Rebhorn, Noble Willingham, Scott Bryce, Raymond Cruz, Dedee Pfeiffer, Miguel (Michael) Sandoval, James Karen; Director: Jon Avnet; Writer: Joan Didion, John Gregory Dunne; Writer: Karl Walter Lindenlaub; Cameo: Thomas Newman.
