The Three Musketeers (1974) The Three Musketeers

The Three Musketeers ★★★½ 1974 (PG) Extravagant and funny version of the Dumas classic. Three swashbucklers (Reed, Chamberlain, Finlay) and their country cohort (York), who wishes to join the Musketeers, set out to save the honor of the French Queen (Chaplin). To do so they must oppose the evil cardinal (Heston) who has his eyes on the power behind the throne and who is aided by cohort Milady (Dunaway). Welch is amusing as clumsy lady-in-waiting Constance. A strong cast leads this winning combination of slapstick and high adventure. Followed by "The Four Musketeers" and "The Return of the Musketeers." 105m/C VHS, DVD. Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, Michael York, Raquel Welch, Frank Finlay, Christopher Lee, Faye Dunaway, Charlton Heston, Geraldine Chaplin, Simon Ward, Jean-Pierre Cassel, William Hobbs; Director: Richard Lester; Writer: George MacDonald Fraser; Writer: David Watkin; Cameo: Michel Legrand. Golden Globes '75: Actress—Mus./Comedy (Welch).
