Smoke (1995) Smoke

Smoke ★★ 1995 (R) Brooklyn slice of life centers around the local cigar store run by Auggie Wren (Keitel). An ensemble piece, divided into five chapters, which includes such characters as down-on-his luck novelist Paul (Hurt), troubled black teenager Rashid (Perrineau Jr.), Augie's ex-wife Ruby (Channing) and supposed daughter (Judd), and many more (some of whom get lost in the shuffle). Wonderfully acted but the stories tend to disappear in a wisp of smoke. Based on a story by Auster. Wang and Auster also made an impromptu companion film "Blue in the Face." 112m/C VHS. Harvey Keitel, William Hurt, Stockard Channing, Forest Whitaker, Harold Perrineau Jr., Ashley Judd, Mary Ward, Victor Argo, Jared Harris, Giancarlo Esposito, Mel Gorham, Stephen Gevedon, Erica Gimpel, Malik Yoba, Jose Zuniga, RuPaul Charles; Director: Wayne Wang; Writer: Paul Auster; Writer: Adam Holender; Cameo: Rachel Portman.
