Sister Act (1992) Sister Act

Sister Act ★★½ 1992 (PG) Surprising boxoffice hit casts Goldberg as a Reno lounge singer, Deloris, who's an inadvertent witness to a mob murder by her boyfriend Vince (Keitel). The cops hide her in a convent—where she's as comfortable in a habit as a fish is out of water. Much to the dismay of the poker-faced Mother Superior (Smith), Deloris takes over the ragtag choir and molds them into a swinging, religious version of a '60s girls group. Stock characters and situations are deflected by some genuinely funny moments and good performances, especially by Najimy and Makkena. Coached by the very clever Shaiman, Whoopi handles her singing bits with gusto, highlight of which is "My God," sung to the tune of "My Guy." 100m/C VHS, DVD, Wide. Whoopi Goldberg, Maggie Smith, Harvey Keitel, Bill Nunn, Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, Mary Wickes, Robert Miranda, Richard Portnow, Joseph Maher; Director: Emile Ardolino; Writer: Joseph Howard; Writer: Adam Greenberg; Cameo: Marc Shaiman.
