Shadowlands (1993) Shadowlands

Shadowlands ★★★ 1993 (PG) Touching, tragic story of the late-in-life romance between celebrated author and Christian theologian C.S. Lewis (Hopkins) and brash New York divorcee Joy Gresham (Winger). Attenborough's direction is rather stately and sweeping and Winger is really too young for her role but Hopkins is excellent as (another) repressed man who finds more emotions than he can handle. Critically acclaimed adaptation of Nicholson's play will require lots of kleenex. 130m/C VHS, DVD. GB Anthony Hopkins, Debra Winger, Edward Hardwicke, Joseph Mazzello, Michael Denison, John Wood, Peter Firth, Peter Howell; Director: Richard Attenborough; Writer: William Nicholson; Writer: Roger Pratt; Cameo: George Fenton.
