Rain Man (1988) Rain Man

Rain Man ★★★½ 1988 (R) When his father dies, ambitious and self-centered Charlie Babbit finds he has an older autistic brother who's been institutionalized for years. Needing him to claim an inheritance, he liberates him from the institution and takes to the road, where both brothers undergo subtle changes. The Vegas montage is wonderful. Critically acclaimed drama and a labor of love for the entire cast. Cruise's best performance to date as he goes from cad to recognizing something wonderfully human in his brother and himself. Hoffman is exceptional. 128m/C VHS, DVD, 8mm. Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, Valeria Golino, Jerry Molen, Jack Murdock, Michael D. Roberts, Ralph Seymour, Lucinda Jenney, Bonnie Hunt, Kim Robillard, Beth Grant; Director: Barry Levinson; Writer: Ronald Bass, Barry Morrow; Writer: John Seale; Cameo: Hans Zimmer. Oscars '88: Actor (Hoffman), Director (Levinson), Orig. Screenplay, Picture; Berlin Intl. Film Fest. '88: Golden Berlin Bear; Directors Guild '88: Director (Levinson); Golden Globes '89: Actor—Drama (Hoffman), Film—Drama.
