Pocketful of Miracles (1961) Pocketful of Miracles

Pocketful of Miracles ★★★ 1961 Capra's final film, a remake of his 1933 "Lady for a Day," is just as corny and sentimental but doesn't work quite as well. Davis is delightful as Apple Annie, a down-on-her-luck street vendor who will go to any extreme to hide her poverty from the well-married daughter she adores. Ford is terrific as the man who transforms Annie into a lady in time for her daughter's visit. Touching. Maybe too touching. Also marks Ann-Margret's film debut. 136m/C VHS, DVD, Wide. Bette Davis, Glenn Ford, Peter Falk, Hope Lange, Arthur O'Connell, Ann-Margret, Thomas Mitchell, Jack Elam, Edward Everett Horton, David Brian, Mickey Shaughnessy; Director: Frank Capra; Writer: Hal Kanter, Harry Tugend; Writer: Robert J. Bronner; Cameo: Walter Scharf. Golden Globes '62: Actor—Mus./Comedy (Ford).
