The Pebble and the Penguin (1994) The Pebble and the Penguin

The Pebble and the Penguin ★★½ 1994 (G) Animated musical about a shy, romantic penguin named Hubie (Short), who must present his lady love Marina (Golden) with a beautiful pebble to win her hand forever before the villainous Drake (Curry) can claim her. Hubie is helped along the way by a cantankerous new friend (Belushi) he meets when stranded on a boat to Tahiti. Together the two race back to Antarctica fighting enemies and the elements along the way. Based on a true mating custom of the Adeli penguins, the story is satisfying for younger viewers, but does not have the animation magic of other recents films to keep adults interested. Beware of the sugary Manilow tunes. 74m/C VHS, DVD. Director: Don Bluth; Writer: Rachel Koretsky, Steve Whitestone; Cameo: Barry Manilow, Bruce Sussman, Mark Watters; V: Martin Short, Annie Golden, Tim Curry, James Belushi; Nar: Shani Wallis.
