McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) McCabe & Mrs. Miller

McCabe & Mrs. Miller ★★★★ 1971 (R) Altman's characteristically quirky take on the Western casts Beatty as a self-inflated entrepreneur who opens a brothel in the Great North. Christie is the madame who helps stabilize the haphazard operation. Unfortunately, success comes at a high price, and when gunmen arrive to enforce a business proposition, Beatty must become the man he has, presumably, merely pretended to be. A poetic, moving work, and a likely classic of the genre. Based on the novel by Edmund Naughton. 121m/C VHS, DVD, Wide. Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, William Devane, Keith Carradine, John Schuck, Rene Auberjonois, Shelley Duvall, Bert Remsen, Michael Murphy, Hugh Millais, Jack Riley; Director: Robert Altman; Writer: Robert Altman; Writer: Vilmos Zsigmond; Cameo: Leonard Cohen.
