Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996) Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love

Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love ★★ 1996 Erotic but flawed fantasy covering the sexual and political wiles of palace life in 16th-century India. Princess Tara (Choudhury) and girlhood friend/servant Maya (Varma) are close until the Princess becomes jealous of the even-more beautiful Maya. In revenge for a public humiliation, Maya seduces Tara's dissolute fiance, Raj Singh (Andrews), and is banished from the palace after the wedding. She becomes involved with handsome royal sculptor Jai Kumar (Tikaram) and later learns the sexual arts of the Kama Sutra, becoming the chief courtesan to the Raj. Messy, somewhat overwrought plot, extremely attractive cast. Also available in an R-rated version. 117m/C VHS, DVD. IN Indira Varma, Sarita Choudhury, Ramon Tikaram, Naveen Andrews, Devi Rekha; Director: Mira Nair; Writer: Mira Nair, Helena Kriel; Writer: Declan Quinn; Cameo: Mychael Danna. Ind.
