The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame ★★★ 1996 (G) Animated/musical version of Victor Hugo's story about deformed bellringer Quasimodo (Hulce) and his love for the beautiful gypsy Esmerelda (Moore). The original isn't exactly fun fare but you expect Disney to find a way to leave everybody humming (and happy). The sweeping music was provided by "Pocahontas" tunesmiths Menken and Schwartz. Comic relief is supplied by three gargoyles, companions to Quasimodo, who are voiced wonderfully by Alexander, Kimbrough and Wickes. Wickes, 85, died six weeks after voicing her role. Looks like another boatload of boxoffice, merchandising, and video sale cash is making its way into old Walt's vaults. 91m/C VHS, DVD, Wide. Director: Kirk Wise, Gary Trousdale; Writer: Irene Mecchi, Tab Murphy, Jonathan Roberts, Bob Tzudiker, Noni White; Cameo: Stephen Schwartz, Alan Menken; V: Tom Hulce, Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, Tony Jay, Charles Kimbrough, Jason Alexander, Mary Wickes, David Ogden Stiers.
