The Good Fairy (1935) The Good Fairy

The Good Fairy ★★★ 1935 Charming romantic comedy based on the play by Ferenc Molnar and given the stardust touch of screenwriter Sturges. Luisa (a charming Sullavan) has just left a Budapest orphanage for a job where she attracts the amorous advances of millionaire Konrad (a scene-stealing Morgan). She pretends to be married and picks the first name out of the phone book as her "husband," that of struggling Max Sporum (Marshall), who goes along with the deception because he's instantly smitten with Luisa. She decides she can play "good fairy" to Max by using Konrad's bankroll but it's not that simple. Remade as 1947's "I'll Be Yours" with Deanna Durbin in the lead. 98m/B VHS, DVD. Margaret Sullavan, Herbert Marshall, Frank Morgan, Reginald Owen, Alan Hale, Beulah Bondi, Cesar Romero; Director: William Wyler; Writer: Preston Sturges; Writer: Norbert Brodine.
