Frida (2002) Frida

Frida ★★½ 2002 (R) Biography of nonconformist Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (Hayek) from her teen years to her death at the age of 44. The story relies heavily on her stormy marriage and continued relationship with famed muralist Diego Rivera (Molina). Director Julie Taymor also surrealistically brings to life several of Kahlo's paintings, although her glamorization of the famously uni-browed and mustachioed painter drew fire from ardent fans. Based on the book by Hayden Herrera. 120m/C VHS, DVD. US Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Antonio Banderas, Roger Rees, Edward Norton, Valeria Golino, Mia Maestro, Saffron Burrows, Patricia Reyes Spindola, Margarita Sanz, Diego Luna; Director: Julie Taymor; Writer: Gregory Nava, Anna Thomas, Clancy Sigeland, Diane Lake; Writer: Rodrigo Prieto; Cameo: Elliot Goldenthal. Oscars '02: Makeup, Score; British Acad. '02: Makeup; Golden Globes '03: Score.
