First Love, Last Rites (1998) First Love, Last Rites

First Love, Last Rites ★★½ 1998 (R) Peretz moved his atmospheric debut feature (adapted from a short story by Ian McEwan) from the English coast to the bayous of Louisiana. There local gal Sissel (Gregson Wagner) is shacking up with fish-out-of-water Brooklyn boy Joey (Ribisi). They have a lot of sex. Sissel finally introduces Joey to her crazy father Henry (Burke) and the two men get involved in an eel-catching business. Then Sissel and Joey start spatting and soon they're not having sex anymore and their romance drifts away. The film does look really good. 93m/C VHS. Natasha Gregson Wagner, Giovanni Ribisi, Robert John Burke, Eli Marienthal; Director: Jesse Peretz; Writer: Jesse Peretz, David Ryan; Writer: Tom Richmond; Cameo: Craig (Shudder to Think) Wedren.
