An Ideal Husband (1999) An Ideal Husband

An Ideal Husband ★★★ 1999 (PG-13) Victorian comedy of manners adapted from the play by Oscar Wilde. The very proper Lady Gertrud Chiltern (Blanchett) discovers that her husband, Sir Robert (Northam), a member of Parliament, attained their fortune and power through questionable means. Robert is being blackmailed over a shady business deal by Gertrud's loathed ex-school mate, Laura Cheveley (Moore). Cynical social butterfly, Lord Arthur Goring (Everett), is drawn into the fray because of his friendship with Chiltern. It's rather exaggerated and very witty, as one would expect of Wilde. 96m/C VHS, DVD. GB Cate Blanchett, Jeremy Northam, Minnie Driver, Rupert Everett, Julianne Moore, Jeroen Krabbe, Lindsay Duncan, Peter Vaughan, John Wood, Marsha Fitzalan, Benjamin Pullen; Director: Oliver Parker; Writer: Oliver Parker; Writer: David Johnson; Cameo: Charlie Mole.
