As George and Lydia Hadley discuss their children's obssession with their virtual-reality nursery, the narrator observes that
"[Lydia] paused in the middle of the kitchen and watched the stove busy humming to itself, making summer for the four."
The stove and other automatic appliances/house features in "The Veldt" are very similar to the "television" walls in Fahrenheit and the self-running house in "There Will Come Soft Rains." All of these elements suggest a time period that for postmodern readers seems to be just around the corner. For Bradbury at the time of the story's publishing, these features would have been quite a bit more futuristic.
