Lestat de Lioncourt becomes a vampire after being chosen by Magnus, an ancient vampire, as his heir. He is unusual in his desire to go beyond the boundaries set by those who came before him. He wants mortals to know of his and other vampires' existence. He in fact becomes a public figure — a rock star — and tells the world about vampires in his music, incurring the wrath of vampires everywhere. When asked by his friend Louis (the vampire who was "interviewed" in Rice's first novel) if Lestat really wanted to start a war between vampires and mortals, Lestat's answer was, "Why not? . ....
