All freshmen must live on campus, unless there are extenuating circumstances with the students health, family, age, status, or nationality, in which case they may be able to live off-campus in school apartments or in a place of their own finding. Students are supposed to live on campus for their first three years, and are able to move off their Senior year. However, many students achieve Senior status before their Junior year and move off campus. Many students also find loopholes through the system, although the school is progressively clamping down on these methods.

As far as roommate matches are concerned, Valparaiso generally does a decent job, but this can be about as random as any school. There are a decent set of guidelines on the roommate request form that can sometimes allow for a good match, such as late-night or early morning people, TV on or off during homework, etc. But nobody ever knows until they get to know their roommate, and I have seen both terrible cases, and very good cases with roommates becoming best friends.
