The Story:
In the midst of the Civil War, Colonel Sartoris came home for a day to warn his family that the Yankee soldiers were close and to help build a stock pen to hide his animals from the Yankees. A few days later, Bayard and Ringo, twelve-year-olds, shot at a Yankee soldier who rode onto Sartoris land. They hid under Granny’s skirts while soldiers searched the property for them. Granny denied that any children lived on the property, and a colonel ordered the rest of the men off the land while eyeing Granny’s skirts. A family man himself, he left after telling Granny...
