According to Masterplots and wikipedia, Balzac's short story was first published in 1831 in the French newspaper L'Artiste. It was published twice more in French during Balzac's lifetime in the collections Etudes philosophiques in 1837 and La Comedie Humaine in 1846.
The web service Project Gutenberg has an English translation that was published in 1845. However, there is no information about the publisher.
