Because of the sheer number of students at UW, housing is not available for all students, so freshmen are not required to live on campus. I recommend living in dorms for at least one year because you learn things like patience and how to live with someone. You would be amazed at how many things roommate(s) teach you in just the first week of living together. At the UW roommates are match based on a very short questionnaire. It asks if you prefer a smoker or non-smoker and whether you are male or female and which dorm you prefer. If you and your roommate have problems that you cannot overcome, then you may switch rooms when the next one is available. RAs do their best to make your stay comfortable. You can always talk to them about any questions you may have.
