Majors can be selected as soon as the student enters the University. However, to be admitted to the major a student must fulfill certain pre-requs to be officially declared as that particular major

The University of Tennessee uses what is called the DARS report to determine how you are progressing towards your major. The Degree Audit Report System will be used each semester to determine where you are in progressing towards your chosen major from freshman year to senior year +. It is uncommon for freshman to choose a major and stick with that major for the years ahead. However, this system will guide you in choosing the classes you need in order to progress into a major.

Progression is completed upon completing all prerequisite courses and providing an application to the desired school that is accepted. When you choose a school to progress into you will meet with an adviser specially appointed directly from that school to help you choose courses that will guide you toward completing a major. A student can apply for progression as soon as they have completed between 30 to 60 hours and all other requirements. The amount of hours that you have completed is how your status is set. For example, between 0 and 29.9 hours is considered freshman status.

Also, it is important to point out that a student must also complete general university requirements before articulation. These requirements change from time to time and are based on the year you enrolled. You should check your student handbook for more information.

Students must declare and be admitted to a major by their 3rd year. Minors are not required to be declared until each student's final semester.

Students may select their major upon entering their freshmen year, but it is good to be sure to choose your major by the beginning of your junior year because this is when you are admitted into the college of your major and being upper level courses.  It is also wise to begin by taking general education classes that are accepted by a wide number to majors just in case there is a chance you may decide to change your major at a later time.
