What is the environment like off-campus? Do students venture off-campus frequently? Posted by enotes on Aug 28, 2008. |

Students venture off campus quite frequently due to our excellent public transportation system. We are within walking distance of downtown Knoxville and just a bus ride from two major malls that include movie theaters, shopping and dining. The downtown area features concerts and cultural events frequently and they are a major attraction to students. Also, many students choose to live off of campus eventually and there are apartment complexes that feature student living and transportation to and from campus. Usually they have pools, recreational areas and offer student programs through management. A few of the cultural attractions that the downtown area offers are : The Tennessee Theater, which offers a historic atmosphere with some of the regions best performance art. This month alone they will feature the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Lucinda Williams, Broadway presents : Chicago, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Peter Frampton, The Beach Boy's... etc. Another theater we have is The Bijou. It is wildly popular among students as it offers a venue for rock concerts and plays. This month they will feature Los Lonely Boy's, Conor Oberst, Maceo Parker, Hanson, Old 97's, and Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet just to name a few. A fantastic feature of Downtown Knoxville is Market Square. There is shopping featuring locally owned businesses, fantastic dining, a performance venue, parks and trees along with artwork and a creek. It is the place to be on Friday and Saturday night. During the late spring they offer something called "Sundown in the City" where major performance acts come and perform in the center of the square. The Tomato Head restaurant is one of the most popular pizza places in Knoxville and features an extensive organic and vegetarian menu. Whether visiting or living in Knoxville, you simply have to check out Market Square. As for the public transportation that I discussed earlier, we call it the Kat Bus System. Students also refer to it as the T. The bus system has both a trolley system and a fleet of buses. Trollys are free and travel around the campus and Fort Sanders area and also to downtown. For traveling further away you might want to use the bus system for a nominal fee. Also, they provide late night transportation if you are planning staying out late at a club or concert. Itis not only an economical way to travel around Knoxville, it is also environmentally friendly. http://www.ci.knoxville.tn.us/kat/default.asp Last but not least I would encourage students to check out the programs that the University of Tennessee Canoe & Hiking Club offer. Upon becoming a member you can join them on outings to various locations in the Smokey Mountains for hiking, campus and canoe trips. Its a very popular way for students to meet other students while enjoying the natural beauty that we here in Knoxville are lucky to have less than 20 minutes away. Gatlinburg, Tn offers snowboarding and skiing and you can rent equipment from the canoing and hiking club in order to do these activities. Posted by rio on Sep 17, 2008. |
