The only classes that are strongly encouraged to be taken freshman year, although not required, are WRIT 140, a writing class, which is paired with a social issues class, of which there are about 20 to choose from. Your essays assigned in your writing class are about topics that come up in your social issues class.  This is if your major is in the USC college of letters, arts, and sciences.  If you are attending one of the professional schools (thornton school of music, etc) the requirements may be different.  However, many of the professional schools still only require WRIT 140 and the Category VI social issues class for freshman.
