University of Richmond Slang

Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to the University of Richmond. The more of these words you know, the better off you'll be.

B-School

The Business School.

Beach Week

Following spring exams when everyone goes to the Outer Banks for a giant, weeklong party.

Boatwright Beach

Large grassy hill in front of Boatwright Library that students use for studying or tanning in nice weather.

Commons

The Tyler Haynes Commons.

Deece

Exclamation meaning that something is decent, good.

Deke

The Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

Delta House

On-campus name of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

D-Hall

The E. Bruce Heilman Dining Center, the main dining hall on campus.

Downtown

The Shockoe Slip bar district of Richmond.

Fiji

The Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

Going Out

When someone asks if you are “Going out tonight?” they are wondering if you are going to drink/party.

Hardyball

One of the intramural sports at UR. This game resembles football, but also combines aspects of rugby. It has to be seen to be understood.

Honor Code

A code that all UR Students agree to live by; a promise not to lie, cheat, or steal. Violators of the honor code are tried by a jury of their peers and, if found guilty, are expelled from the University.

Old South

On-campus name of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Pier

The Tyler Haynes Grill located in the Commons. It serves fast food.

PJ

Papa John's Pizza. As in, “Let's order PJ.”

Quad

The area between the Jepson, Ryland, and Weinstein buildings.

RAs

Resident assistants, students paid by the University to keep other students from breaking the rules.

Rape Van

The safety shuttle.

Social

A formal event usually hosted by a fraternity or club team where you and a date go to a bar or restaurant that has been rented out for the evening by the organization.

Spiderbytes

Daily electronic newsletter sent to all members of the University.

Spidermail

The name of the e-mail service used by students and professors at UR.

The River

James River Pony Pastures, an area where students go to swim and tan in nice weather.

The Row

Fraternity row, located on campus. Each lodge is allowed four hours for social functions per weekend that can be distributed on either Friday or Saturday night.

Tri-Delt

The Delta Delta Delta sorority.

Webbers

Students who are in the “Spinning Your Web” program.

Woho

Waffle House.
