ND Slang

Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to Notre Dame. The more of these words you know, the better off you'll be.

  • A nickname given to Architecture majors.

  • Refers to an event held during finals week when the gentlemen of a certain dorm—usually Alumni Hall—streak the campus at midnight.

  • A nickname for the Coleman-Morse Center; which houses classrooms, the Campus Ministry Office, the Writing Center, and the First-year of Studies Office. CoMo also has a study lounge that provides students with free popcorn and sodas as they study.

  • A class required for arts and letters majors during sophomore year that involves an intensive study of a particular subject.

  • The abbreviation students give to both North and South Dining Hall.

  • A nickname for DeBartolo Hall, the main building in which most students have the majority of their classes.

  • A student at ND.

  • Points that students can purchase from the ID Card Office that can be used to purchase food, groceries, and bookstore merchandise.

  • A student meal plan with 14 meals a week.

  • Meal points allotted in the Flex 14 meal plan. These points can be used at other campus restaurants and at the campus mini-grocery store.

  • A nonalcoholic group that sponsors events on campus.

  • A freshman at ND.

  • The nickname for Freshman Orientation.

  • Located behind the Basilica, God Quad is home to Sorin Hall, St. Edward's Hall, and Walsh Hall.

  • Refers to the Golden Dome that sits atop the University's Main Building. This term has evolved into a generalized reference to Notre Dame.

  • A memorial to Our Lady of Lourdes that acts as a place of reflection and prayer for many in the Notre Dame community.

  • The mini grocery store located in the LaFortune Student Center.

  • A traditional Irish breakfast of beer and eggs that takes place at Turtle Creek on Saturday mornings before home football games.

  • The nickname given to the LaFortune Student Center.

  • Directly behind North Quad, and next to the Hesburg Library, Mod Quad holds Siegfried Hall, Knott Hall, Pasquerilla East, and Pasquerilla West.

  • Nickname given to Father Edward Malloy, president of the University.

  • Located near North Dining Hall; North Quad houses Zahm Hall, Cavanaugh Hall, Farley Hall, Breen-Phillips Hall, and Keenan-Stanford Hall.

  • A nickname for O'Shaughnessy Hall, which holds most of the arts and letters offices, a radio station, and Waddick's café.

  • The hours during which members of the opposite sex are allowed to be in your dorm room.

  • A meal plan with 21 meals per week.

  • The female pep rally dance group; worshipped by Notre Dame men as the only hot girls on campus.

  • A term referring to an area of campus on which certain dorms are located.

  • A party held at Turtle Creek apartments at the beginning and end of the year.

  • The term used to refer to the Rockne Memorial, a gymnasium named after Fighting Irish football coach, Knute Rockne.

  • Near South Dining Hall; South Quad is home to Alumni Hall, Dillon Hall, Pangborn Hall, Badin Hall, Lyons Hall, Morissey Manor, Fisher Hall, and Howard Hall.

  • The abbreviation for the Student Union Board.

  • A fifth-year senior at ND.

  • The nickname for the mural of Jesus on the Hesburg Library, called “Touchdown Jesus” because it faces the Notre Dame Stadium and pictures Christ with upheld arms that look much like a field goal.

  • Behind South Quad; West Quad is home to Welsh Family Hall, Keogh Hall, O’Neil Hall, and McGlinn Hall.
