Yes, there is a first-year writing class requirement. This can be fulfilled by taking one of two English classes (124 or 125),or taking one of a variety of other classes. These can be found at http://www.umich.edu/~newtolsa/pdf/courseguideprint.pdf.
I hope this helps!

Most majors will have an information sheet which outlines the courses you should take during your freshman year. You can talk to an academic advisor about any questions that you have regarding which classes to take, and when to take them.
As a first year engineering student, you will be taking Engineering 100 and 101. Engineering 100 is an introductory class with a large emphasis on technical writing and group projects. Engineering 101 is an introductory computer programming course. You will also want to take a math class and possibly a science class, and possibly an elective.
As a first year music student, you will be taking two music theory classes, written and aural theory. You will most likely participate in some sort of group class, choir, band, or orchestra. You will also have your private lessons. You will have to take musicology and piano at some point, and most students choose to get them out of the way as soon as they can.
