What are the political and social leanings of most students and faculty? Is it easy to express opposing views?

The University of Michigan, and the surrounding area of Ann Arbor, has a reputation for being rather liberal. However, the campus is also very open to opposing views; there are numerous groups for any political preferences, and hatred is the only thing that isn't tolerated well.

There are also many student organizations where you can meet people that share your views. The College Democrats and College Republicans are two examples of groups that bring in guest speakers, and do voluntary work to spread their opinions and views throughout campus.
