What is the environment like off-campus? Do students venture off-campus frequently?

The environment off-campus is that of a small city. There are lots of retaurants, a decent mall, and there are always festivals and activities going on in Ann Arbor itself. Lots of students live off-campus, and there are enough bus routes that getting off-campus is easy even without a car. Plenty of students hang out off-campus, which is one of the advantages of having the university within the city.

To add to her response, there is a wonderful ZipCar program, where students can rent a car by the hour. There is a low membership fee, and then you pay only $8 an hour, which includes gas and insurance. My roommate even rented it for an entire day last year to go to Detroit with a bunch of her friends, so they could all split the cost of renting the car.
