University of Iowa Slang

Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to the University of Iowa. The more of these words you know, the better off you'll be.

Blue & red route, Hawkeye-Interdorm, Interdorm

Bus routes most students take; they run by every dorm and most major areas of campus.

Career Center

The UI's job placement center.

CIC

The Campus Information Center; the place to go if you have any questions about UI.

DI

The Daily Iowan, the student newspaper; it arrives on students' doorsteps Monday–Friday.

EPB

The English-Philosophy Building; everybody has one class in here at one point in time.

FAC

“Fridays after class;” when students head to the bar after they are done with classes for the week.

FSG

Facilities Services Group, the organization that maintains the University campus.

Hawk ID

The student's username to log in to various UI Web sites.

Hawks

Shortened name for the sports team (the Hawkeyes), because it's a waste of time to say the extra four letters.

ICPD

The Iowa City Police Department.

IMU

The Iowa Memorial Union, which has a food court, conference rooms, and the bookstore.

ISIS

The Web site all students use; this is where you will register for courses, vote in UISG elections, or check your progress towards your major.

ITC

The Information Technology Center, or computer lab.

ITS

Information Technology Services, the group that runs the UI's computer system.

KrUI

The UI student-run radio station.

Ped Mall

The Pedestrian Mall, the heart of downtown Iowa City; contains several bars, restaurants, and retail shops.

Power registration

The registration system to use when registering for classes; it is much easier to use than Rapid Registration.

The res

The beach along the Coralville Lake where students relax during the warmer periods of the school year.

RVAP

Rape Victims Advocacy Program, a group that provides support for rape victims.

SpoCo

The shortened name students use to refer to the Sports Column bar.

UIHC

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; one of the best in the nation.

UIPD

University of Iowa Police Department.

UISG

The University of Iowa Student Government. The students who represent the student body to the University administration.

University Heights

A small town right off the University campus; a major speed trap for student drivers.

WebCT

A Web service that allows classes to become more interactive; lecture notes, announcements, and grades are posted on WebCT. Blackboard and ICON are similar applications.

WraC

Woman Resource and Activities Center; provides opportunities in women's studies and holds different event throughout the year, such as book clubs.
