Yes freshman are allowed to pledge in the fall and are actually encouraged to by most fraternities. Usually spring classes are fairly small and fraternities pride themselves on their fall pledge classes. As far as quality goes, it all depends on what you are looking for. For instance certain fraternities are considered "top houses" these consist of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Delta Theta. However, finding the right fraternity is truly all about comfort, when choosing a frat the most important thing to consider is finding where you feel comfortable. It's important to note that fraternities vary from campus to campus. I was in FarmHouse, an agricultural fraternity that had a group of guys with whom I really seemed to get along. However, there are probably some bad chapters at other universities or colleges. At some schools, fraternities such as Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Alpha, Kappa Sigma, etc. are great, while at others, they may not be so. Do some asking around about the fraternities' reputations. During rush week, everyone will offer you ALL you can eat/drink, and make you feel wanted. This is often different than the poor girls, who are often snubbed by certain sororities. Don't try to seem overly eager, but don't be apathetic either. Just... be yourself! They'll be making an effort to get to know you, as you get to know them. There's no "perfect fit" for you, as each fraternity will have guys with whom you'll relate, and guys who you'll more or less tolerate. The important thing is the friendships. One last thing... ask about the dues. Is there a requirement to live at the house? How much will it cost you? Are they notorious for hazing their pledges? You can ask about this at the office of Greek Life, and get a straight answer. Posted by afi80fl on Feb 16, 2009. |
