All freshman must live on campus unless they can prove that they will be living with their family less than 30 miles from campus. Roommates are matched up according to a survey, sent out when admission is accepted, on preferences of each person.

As was answered, all freshman must live on campus, but I do have freshman friends who managed to live with me and other upper classmen off campus (not with their families either) by making an appeal to the Housing Department. All that is required is filling out a few more forms and making sure your parents approve. As far as roommates go, I was able to request a roommate and we were matched up in the dorm and room we wanted. If you get stuck with a roommate you can't handle, it's not hard to switch. Just ask the RA to help you and within a week or two they'll have the situation worked out.
