Were some of the journals lost during the expedition in Undaunted Courage?

I read the book awhile ago and seemed to recall that some of the items collected and some of the journals were cached away before heading over the Bitterroots Mts. and upon returning after the winter on the coast, the items were gone. Have I just got it completely wrong?
