No book, except the Bible, has ever been as popular. It sold 10,000 copies in its first week and by the end of its first year, over 300,000 copies had been sold. It was the first American novel to sell over one million copies However, the book's popularity faded at the end of the nineteenth century. It was overshadowed by "Ben Hur" and then "Gone With the Wind" in the 1930's. By the end of World War II, the popularity of the book fell tremendously. In 2001, only 18,000 copies were sold. However, it has been translated into more that 20 languages. A rough guess of the number of copies sold might be 10 million, but that is only a guess.
