The Unbearable Lightness of Being deals with the same social concern as The Book of Laughter and Forgetting — life under Czechoslovakian communism — and makes much the same general observations. The Unbearable Lightness of Being, however, takes a somewhat different approach: It focuses on fewer characters and follows them throughout the novel.
