The Unbearable Lightness of Being | Literary Precedents

With its more traditional approach, The Unbearable Lightness of Being is reminiscent of numerous novels from the nineteenth century. As good a precedent as any would be Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (1873-1877), which is prominently mentioned in The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Tereza is reading Anna Karenina when Tomas meets her, they name their dog Karenin, and the novel's last section is titled "Karenin's Smile."
