What is Bella longing to do? Why?

    That is a very general question.  Are you talking about a specific longing?  Throughout much of the series she is longing to become a vampire, because she feels that a life time of happiness with Edward is not enough.  Also, she doesn't want to grow old as he stays the same age forever.

    Bella is your classic "pleaser".  She wants to make Edward happy, her family happy, Jacob happy.  However, the heart of what she wants is to join Edward's family as a "vegetarian" vampire.

    However, she is torn because she knows that taking that action will devastate her family and could end her friendship with Jacob.  It could also start a "war" between the wolves and the vampires.
