The women are more hesitant because of the murder that has taken place and because they are entering another woman's domain without her approval. By lingering by the door, they show a respect for her space that the men do not seem to understand. This innate understanding of other women and how women think is what allows the wives to see what has really taken place there, something that stays hidden to the men.
