The Story:

Danny returned home from World War I to find that his grandfather had bequeathed him two houses on Tortilla Flat. The responsibility of ownership depressed Danny. A drunken spree of window breaking and the jail sentence it earned him did little to relieve his malaise. Then he ran into his friend Pilon, who moved into the larger house with him, agreeing to pay fifteen dollars a month rent. After an argument, Pilon moved into Danny’s smaller house. The pair shared wine, women, and worry. Ownership plagued Danny.
