The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella Summary

Synopsis

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, published in 2010, is part of Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular Twilight series. In this novella, Meyers explores the life of newborn vampire Bree Tanner, who briefly appears in the novel Eclipse as a member of Victoria’s vampire army.

Bree is a teenage girl who is changed into a vampire by Victoria. Bree lives with a coven of twenty other newborns and Riley, Victoria’s subordinate. Riley is in charge of creating an army of newborn vampires for Victoria so that she can avenge her lover, James, whom the Cullens killed when he came after Bella in Twilight. However, Riley and the newborns are not aware of Victoria’s plans, and the newborns are not even allowed to know Victoria's name.

Bree lives her life in terror of the unstable, hungry newborns who attack each other at the slightest provocation. She manages to protect herself by staying out of sight, often hiding behind a vampire who has a talent for repelling people.

Diego, another member of the coven, befriends Bree, and she begins to have a romantic interest in him. The two hunt and work together to protect each other from the volatile newborns. They discover that they have been lied to and are kept in the dark both figuratively and literally by Riley and Victoria. Bree begins to mistrust Riley even more when she learns about their purpose as an army.

Diego, who still trusts Riley, decides to tell him about his newfound knowledge that vampires do not burn in the sun. Diego disappears after talking with Riley. Bree follows the vampire army to battle, hoping to find Diego already there. Bree later learns that Diego was killed because of his knowledge.

After the newborn army is defeated by the Cullens and the werewolves, Bree surrenders. The Cullens offer to teach Bree their way of life, but when the Volturi arrive, they kill her.

Instantly topping best-seller lists in the United States and the United Kingdom, the novella sold over 89,000 copies in under nineteen hours. Although fans of the Twilight series will know the ending of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner before even starting to read it, Bree’s journey through the murky waters of truth, love, and trust is a valuable addition to the Twilight series.
